Released on August 2, 1986, Laputa: Castle in the Sky was the first film produced as a Studio Ghibli work. It was conceived as a revival of “children’s animated films” in response to the dominance of robot and sci-fi anime at the time. The film is highly regarded for its exhilarating aerial scenes, characteristic of Hayao Miyazaki, and its rich steampunk-inspired world, making it a culmination of his early works.

The story follows Pazu, an apprentice mechanic whose late father once discovered the legendary floating island of Laputa but was never believed. One day, Pazu encounters a girl named Sheeta, who falls from the sky wearing a glowing blue pendant. Sheeta is revealed to be the rightful heir to Laputa’s throne, and her pendant is actually a levitation stone that grants the ability to float in the sky. However, the two are soon captured by the military, who are also searching for Laputa. Pazu is released, but Sheeta remains in their custody. Determined to rescue her, Pazu joins forces with the air pirate gang led by Captain Dola, who are also after the levitation stone. Together, they set out on an adventure that ultimately leads them to the fabled island of Laputa—but what awaits them there is beyond their imagination…
