Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro is a 1979 Japanese animated film and the second theatrical movie based on Monkey Punch’s Lupin III series. It was the first theatrical film directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Set in the fictional European country of the Duchy of Cagliostro, the story follows Lupin III and his gang as they uncover the secrets behind a mysterious ring and the legendary counterfeit currency known as the “Goat Bills.”
The story begins with the world-famous thief Lupin III, along with his partners Daisuke Jigen and Goemon Ishikawa, successfully robbing the national casino vault in Monaco. However, they soon discover that the stolen money is none other than the infamous Goat Bills—perfectly forged banknotes known for their extreme precision. Following one of the Lupin family’s guiding principles, “Never deal in counterfeits,” Lupin and Jigen discard the fake money and set their sights on uncovering the origin of the Goat Bills. Their investigation leads them to the small European nation of Cagliostro, rumored to be the source of the legendary counterfeit currency.
