The story is set in medieval Japan, around the Muromachi period. In a village of the Emishi people, located between the east and the north, a young boy named Ashitaka is cursed with a deadly affliction on his right arm after slaying a monstrous creature known as a “Tatari-gami” (Curse God) that attacked his village. The creature was originally a great boar god named Nago, who had been shot with an iron bullet by an unknown assailant and, driven by hatred towards humans, had transformed into a vengeful Tatari-gami. As a result of the curse, Ashitaka is banished from his village and sets out on a journey to the west—the land from which the boar god had come—in hopes of finding a way to lift his curse.
