“Yasoukyoku” is an adventure game (sound novel) for PlayStation released by Victor Interactive Software (now Marvelous Interactive). The protagonist is an ordinary fourth-year university student (gender selectable) who starts a live-in part-time job at a private library deep in the mountains of a secluded rural town called Okunezato, following a chance encounter. Guided by numerous books related to death, the protagonist becomes involved in various incidents.

The story is structured into a “Prologue” and several self-contained episodes, adopting a style where progressing to the Best Ending or Good Ending leads to the next story, known as the sequel scenario system. This system became a staple in subsequent works by TEAM CRAZE. Additionally, the scenarios follow the standard multi-ending format typical of sound novels, with each scenario consisting of one Best Ending, multiple Good Endings, and numerous Bad Endings. An “Ending List” is provided for players to view these endings. The “Ending List” is designed like a bookshelf, with each new ending reached adding a “book” to the shelf. Shelves are divided for each episode, with different volumes and titles given to each ending (e.g., Prologue “Long Summer”).
