The biggest change to the game lies in the song selection. Unlike previous installments that allowed the player to select songs from one menu, the song list in 4thMix is split into multiple categories. Once a category is selected at the beginning of a play session, song selection is limited to that category. 4thMix also introduced a battle mode, a two-player mode which has players battling for the highest score. The arrow stream would begin at the middle of the screen and branch out into two streams, where each player would receive different step charts. Like previous versions of DDR, 4thMix home versions feature an edit mode that allowed players to creat custom step charts for any song in the game. These could be played on specialized 4thMix arcade machines that had PlayStation memory card slots.
