This system was seen as a testbed for the home communication system using the Family Computer (Famicom), which Nintendo was eager to popularize. The Disk Drive for the Disk System also came with a communication expansion port . The same expansion port existed in the Twin Famicom as well.

In September 1985, Nintendo’s president, Hiroshi Yamauchi, revealed plans to launch the “Family Computer Network System” by the fall of 1986. This network would connect to a large computer at Nippon Telegraph and Telephone, allowing simultaneous participation in games and message exchanges .

Although this plan did not materialize, it was applied to the “Family Computer Communication Adapter Set” released in July 1988. Services included connecting to the Captain System, stock trading (Famicom Trade), and phone betting on public races (JRA-PAT). Users could purchase a separate communication adapter and insert it into the Famicom, connecting to these services via telephone lines (DDX-TP). However, these systems using the Famicom were eventually phased out in favor of similar services provided by PC communications, which offered better performance in terms of processing speed and graphics display. Notably, JRA-PAT continued to allow the purchase of betting tickets with some limitations until the end of July 2015.
