Hikaru no Go is a manga series, a coming of age story based on the board game Go written by Yumi Hotta and illustrated by Takeshi Obata with an anime adaptation. The production of the series’ Go games was supervised by Go professional Yukari Umezawa (5-dan). The manga is largely responsible for popularizing Go amongst the youth of Japan since its debut, and in other areas such as China, South Korea, and Taiwan. More recently it has gained much popularity in the United States. The title is sometimes abbreviated ‘HnG’.

It is the fourth game based on the manga and anime of same name, the second installment of the PlayStation version. This is an “if” story set during Hikaru and his friends’ time as insei. The player takes on the role of an insei aiming to become a professional Go player. Hikaru, Akira, Mitani, and other popular characters appear as rivals with full voice acting. Numerous iconic scenes from the original work are inserted into the Go matches to enhance the unfolding story. When the passion gauge is filled, players can make a move full of passion, putting pressure on the opponent and potentially inducing unexpected mistakes.
