Nights into Dreams is a 1996 action game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Saturn. It is the second game made by Sonic Team which is not a Sonic game after Ristar. The story follows teenagers Elliot Edwards and Claris Sinclair, who enter Nightopia, a dream world where all dreams take place. With the help of Nights, an exiled “Nightmaren”, they begin a journey to stop the evil ruler Wizeman from destroying Nightopia and consequently the real world. Players control Nights flying through Elliot and Claris’s dreams to gather enough energy to defeat Wizeman and save Nightopia. The game is presented in 3D and imposes time limits on every level, in which the player must accumulate points to proceed.

Sega Multi Controller is a control pad developed for use with the Sega Saturn. Debuting with NiGHTS into Dreams, it was Sega’s answer to the then revolutionary Nintendo 64 controller, which featured an analogue stick as opposed to relying solely on D-Pads. Analogue sticks generally allow for greater precision in a 3D environment, which in 1996 were becoming more common in the console video game market.
