In ancient times, the world was enveloped in darkness due to the invasion of three Demon Lords from another realm. The Demon Lords, known as the “Beast King,” the “Lord of the Undead,” and the “King of Darkness,” led armies of monsters that overwhelmed humanity. An elf sorceress with wisdom and courage, a human swordsman, and a dwarf warrior challenged the Demon Lords and achieved a remarkable victory. After the battle, they vanished without leaving a trace.
Centuries later, one day, a young and daring elven bounty hunter named Mail had cornered the leader of the Marionette Thieves, Nuts Cracker, who had a bounty of 500,000 gold. However, Nuts managed to escape. Disheartened by her lack of success and contemplating retirement, Mail stumbled upon the name of a high-profile bounty of 2 million gold, the magician Material Horn. Believing that Material’s appearance made him easy to capture, she decided to make one last attempt at success. With the help of Material’s apprentice, Tatt, and the cave-dwelling monster, Gau, Mail set out to pursue Material.
The story is the same as the PC version, but the character displays are larger and the expressions in the dialogue bubbles change according to the content. Like the Super Famicom version mentioned later, Mail’s attacks have been enhanced with more action, such as swinging a sword or defending with a shield instead of just body slamming. Additionally, the advantages of CD-ROM media are utilized with background music (BGM) and character voice lines recorded with voice actors. As a result, some game writers have noted that it has taken on the characteristics of a character game. The large capacity of the CD-ROM has been used to include animated sequences in various visual scenes, enhancing the game. All graphics used were drawn specifically for the MEGA-CD version.
Megumi Hayashibara, who voiced Mail in this game, also voiced the character in the drama CDs and radio dramas. The development code name was “Sister Sonic.” It was originally planned to use characters from the “Sonic Series,” but this was changed due to fan opposition. Additionally, initial character designs were redrawn in response to opinions that they did not resemble the final characters. The Mega Drive/MEGA-CD version was only released in North America.
An opening animation with different content from the PC version was created, but it was not included due to its tenuous connection to the main game.
